Youngplace invites art lovers, families, and our community to attend the Youngplace Art & Craft Holiday Market, a one-day art market and gallery-style exhibition presented throughout the first and second-floor Hallway Galleries.

This market places a special focus on craft artists and makers working in three dimensions, including textiles, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, mixed media and other craft-based practices, so it is the perfect place to find a unique hand-made gift for your loved ones this holiday season. Have fun with the whole family and enjoy face painting and live music performances!

We asked artist Paula Hartmann about her upcoming show and their body of work.

ArtHubs Interviewer: Tell us about your upcoming exhibition.

Paula Hartmann:

MANY COLOURS, ONE SKY is a suspended installation of four clouds of lightweight, kinetic paper mobiles, creating a floating field of colour that visitors can walk around and under.

The work reflects on diversity, belonging, and Canadian identity, celebrating the many cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives that come together to create a shared community. Each colour remains distinct while contributing to a collective atmosphere of joy. Gently moving with the air, the mobiles evoke the fluidity of identity and invite viewers to consider what unites us.

What do we share when we stand beneath the same sky?

AH: Tell us about your artist practice!

PH: In my practice, I work with paper, yarn, wire, and other simple materials that can be found in almost every household. I am fascinated by the alchemy of transforming the ordinary into something meaningful and beautiful. There is a constant desire in my work to make the mundane feel sacred.

My work is inspired by geometry and harmonic patterns, which, combined with colour, bring me into a state of joy and peace. Through my work, I hope to share these feelings with others—to create moments of wonder, uplift, and connection.

AH: Describe your most recent inspiration.

PH: I am constantly inspired by a million things, but I always return to flowers and the organic shapes found in nature. I am also deeply inspired by the unseen—the feeling that we are all connected by invisible threads and energies that move beneath our visible reality. In my work, geometric forms become a way of making these intangible connections visible, giving shape to something I intuitively feel is always present.

AH: What's upcoming for you that we can highlight?

PH: A project that has been on my mind and that I would like to explore more deeply is the use of technology to create increasingly intricate modules. I am particularly interested in experimenting with tools such as laser cutters and 3D printers to expand the possibilities of my geometric forms and develop new sculptural approaches.

In October, I will be leading two workshops at the Neilson Park Creative Centre: a mobile-making workshop for adults and a paper chandelier workshop for teens.

We asked artist Greg Angus about his upcoming show and their body of work.

ArtHubs Interviewer: Tell us about your upcoming exhibition.

Greg Angus:

The large format paintings are made with wax and oil paint on wooden panel, layered to build specific colour sequences in order to achieve the correct frequency for the base of the painting. The composition is drawn onto the base panel, negative areas are removed allowing for a second, multiple layering of colour. Different from the first layer, this one is based on the quality of energy needed within the painting. The movement of the wax into the cracks and valleys leaves a more complex surface marking the beginning of the final stage. Scrapers, chisels and knives are used to reveal the overall skeleton of the painting. This delicate excavation is repeated over days and weeks. It is a painstaking, intuitive process that demands absolute concentration and a complete letting go.
The newer series in small format are acrylic on board.

AH: Tell us about your upcoming projects and shows that we can look forward to!

GA: Inspired by a recent trip to Hamburg, Germany, I would like to start a new series of mid-size paintings in encaustic on board based on patterns found in nature.

I will also be having a show at the end of November at Naka Ima, Toronto.

We asked Joshua Bonnici, General Manager of Sweet Action Theatre. about the show and their work with artists of all ages.

ArtHubs Interviewer: Please d escribe your business and the artist practices you teach.

Sweet Action Theatre:
Sweet Action Theatre Company is Toronto’s home for the ridiculous. We are a registered non-profit with a focus on clown performance, as well as adjacent theatrical work including bouffon and improv. We started as a space where international master teachers could train students in the many styles of clown, and we've since grown into a community of artists devising work that's both hilarious and vulnerable. These creations have been showcased and won awards in international festivals such as Orlando Fringe, Cincinnati Fringe, Edmonton Fringe, and Edinburgh Fringe.

AH: Describe a current project you are excited about!

SAT: Our exhibit for Nuit Blanche, Sweet Action Theatre Presents: One Nuit Only includes 10 1-hour-long comedic shows. These theatrical works have won awards and received glowing reviews at international festivals in Canada, U.S.A, and Scotland. Don’t miss a truly unique experience that can only be seen on this special night.

Attendees will be able to enter in 5-minute intervals. Attendees can leave at any point, and they can also choose to stay for however long they wish. If they leave they can queue again to enter during the next 5-minute interval, subject to capacity limitations.

While waiting in queue, enjoy a live-feed of the performance action in the theatre, and/or view information on the history of the theatre and the nature of their work.

Avenue Road Arts School:
As a Toronto-based art school, our practice is a collaborative and collective sense of creation through community learning. We spotlight the diverse practices of professional working artists, bringing their expertise directly to the wider community through accessible and immersive classes for all ages and levels.

AH: Describe a current project you are excited about!

ARAS:
We are excited about the various community partnerships we have across the GTA, including local centres and organizations, in bringing arts directly to Toronto neighborhoods. Through collaborative public murals, after-school school programming, and interactive workshops in public spaces, we love bringing art to local communities.

AH: Can you describe your most recent inspiration?

ARAS:
What inspires us most is the creativity of our city: the active, evolving work of local artists and the distinct messages they bring to light. We view contemporary practice as a living dialogue. We find constant motivation in discovering what Toronto’s creators are exploring right now and finding meaningful ways to share it; making an art practice accessible, relatable and educational.

AH: What is the next project you have planned?

ARAS:

Our focus remains dedicated to our core mission in bringing and expanding community-based art access across Toronto. We are developing our collaborations, public space workshops, and educational programs that bring local artists and the community together. For us, the next project is always an extension of our ongoing programming that is active year round within our studio walls and across the city.

"Suburbia in the Air" by Alex Hall

As a child, the world was so large. Any space can be filled with a little bit of imagination. My show, "Suburbia in the Air", is a construction of nostalgia depicting the feeling of my childhood in the suburbs of Oakville. Growing up, my neighbourhood served as an escape. A fantasy land where my sister and I could endlessly play with our creativity in our backyard.

Through the lens of my younger self, I imagine each photo as a window to my childhood memories. They are a starting off point of a fantastical make-believe journey. This series is a reminder that we can still find whimsy in the world even in adulthood. There are reflections of my younger self in my everyday life. That child is still in there seeing the world with curiosity and patience.

As an adult, the world feels out of reach. It is impossible, but I want to go back to that time. I miss the "suburbia in the air". But that is okay. I will live on with my childhood whispering to me through the window.

The Youngplace Art & Craft Holiday Market offers artists and makers an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in a engaging, professional setting in the heart of Toronto’s West Queen West neighbourhood.

The market will take place alongside the Toronto Potters Holiday Pottery Sale, bringing visitors together for a festive day of art, craft and community. The event will also feature holiday music, refreshments from local food vendors and hands-on craft activities.

Booth Options & Pricing

4 Foot Space - $125 + HST
Recommended for emerging artists or artists with small to medium 2D mounted works

6 Foot Space - $150 + HST
Recommended for artists with medium to large 2D mounted works, or multidisciplinary artists with 2D/3D works

8 Foot Space - $200 + HST
Recommended for established/experienced artists and artists with large to oversized 2D mounted works and/or a large body of multidisciplinary work

First Floor Table – (6 Foot Table Only) - $150 + HST
Recommended for artisans with small-to-medium 3D works. Tables are available for rent.

Join us for our next Material Exchange on August 19th from 12-2PM!

The Material Library is Back! Join us next Wednesday, August 19th for our monthly Material Swap and Exchange. Bring your unused craft items and trade them in for something new to you, absolutely free!

The Material Library is a programming initiative created by Youngplace to create a place for those to share and swap art supplies. Once a month, we open the Material Library for a Material Exchange, encouraging any artists, teachers, creators, or neighbours to come by, drop off their unused crafting items, swap for new ones, and even stay to chat with fellow makers. The Material Library has a wide range of items, such as fabrics, paints, beadery supplies, crepe paper, and much more.

Please note that we DO NOT ACCEPT the following items:

-Any sharps (needles, exacto knives etc,)

-Any explosive material, or

-Any toxic items.

A retrospective exhibition presenting 300 images from 50 countries and five continents.

"John Simone’s Photographic Voyages: A Curious Visual Atlas of the World " brings together 300 photographs from 50 countries and five continents, created during Simone’s five years working as Senior Photographer and Photography Teacher aboard Princess Cruises.

Organized into 33 themed grids, the exhibition moves beyond traditional travel photography. Simone groups images by rhythm, contrast, humour, subject, and feeling, allowing unexpected connections to emerge between cultures, objects, rituals, landscapes, architecture, and everyday encounters.

The result is a curious visual atlas: part personal archive, part global portrait, and part record of what happens when a photographer keeps looking closely at the world in motion.

The Hallway Galleries is proud to display “Flight or Float”, an exhibition by artist Anna Lefsrud from October 18th-30th!

Flight or Float explores a range of creatures in motion, using miniature configurations, different settings and everyday materials.

“Rarely do we consider that beyond our acknowledged 5 senses, all beings have the sense of balance, acutely attuned to our environment and movement. Birds for instance, are a dynamic moving point in space, as dependent on gravity as on air for flight , and able to perform their acrobatics with amazing skill and accuracy. Movement and gravity are pervasive themes in my work. Our sense of equilibrium anchors and guides us, is our internal plumb line, whether we are flying, climbing uneven terrain, float ing or balancing delicately on a point. It also guides all animals and birds while travelling together, evidence of more common knowledge that is universally, instinctively adhered to. Flight or Float explores a range of creatures in motion, using miniature configurations, different settings and everyday materials.” -Anna Lefsrud

Artists must exhibit and vend their own work, resale of work made by others is not prohibited.

Work must be complete, presented professionally and with a clear and feasible booth/gallery plan.

Artists should demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, and ability to exhibit work in a gallery context.

Artwork must be family friendly in nature, and not contain overt nudity, graphic or violent imagery.
Applications will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis considering eligibility requirements above, please note wall space is limited.

Youngplace encourages applications from those that represent the full diversity of communities in Canada, including complexities of intersecting identities such as ability, class, gender, race, and sexual orientation. SHOWCASING & SELLING YOUR WORK
Exhibitors must showcase and sell work from the media category indicated in their applications and represented by the supporting images provided with the application. Please note that if you would like to showcase or sell work from another media category, it must be submitted for review by the selection committee. You are not permitted to display or sell work of other artist(s) or any other products that are not your original creations.

BOOTH SPACES
Gallery spaces located in the Hallway Galleries will be assigned based on the applicants ranking of spaces. A maximum of 35 exhibition spaces will be available. There are limited quantities of all booth sizes, we will do our best to assign your first ranked option. These prices reflect a subtotal for the day market event and extended exhibition.

4’ Gallery Space (4 linear feet of wall, with or without a table)

Space fee $200.00

6’ Gallery Space (6 linear feet of wall, with or without a table)

Space fee $240.00

8’ Gallery Space (8 linear feet of wall, with or without a table)

Space fee $ 280.00

Tables can be provided for a fee of $25.00. This fee covers your provided table and black table linen. Please see reference images of gallery space with tables for context. (NOTE: Tables are not required.)
